This book is excellent and does exactly what it sets out to do, namely give medical students a great resource for teaching themselves medical Physiology. It's not a detail oriented reference book, there are plenty of those on the market if that is what you are looking for. This is the book you would use to supplement your class notes/powerpoints while taking Phys in medical school. After reading this cover to cover, using the authors BRS Phys book for Step 1 prep would be the natural progression as her BRS is just the cliff notes of this text. It's a wonderfully written book with a logical flow and appropriate use of pictures to get the point across. Very clear explanations with alot of the superfluous fluff left on the cutting room floor.
This textbook is a godsend for MS1 and MS2s and even for those who want a quick review of the basic medical sciences. It's less of a textbook and more of a condensed review. If you read SDN or any other medical school forums, almost everyone recommends getting this book, known as "Big Constanzo". I found getting the hard copy much better than the ebook because of the ease of scribbling, underlying and annotating. With this book, you don't need another thicker physiology textbook - it has everything you need to know, at least for physiology.This book is clearly organized and the explanation are impeccable - I used it to review for classes and final exams in medical school as well as for Step 1. The best chapters in my opinion are the endocrinology and reproductive chapters. Keep in mind this doesn't have heme, MSK or derm so you'll need to get that information elsewhere!
This textbook is phenomenal. It was recommended by a physician at the hospital I work at before I began my first year of medical school and let me tell you- this text is clear and concise, and it helped out tremendously. I preferred this text way over the text that was used for class. It followed along with our lectures nicely and broke things down to more of a simpler level, which made learning the material better. The student access code it comes with allows you to have the book online where you can answer questions and so forth and have them 'checked'. I love this book and would definitely suggest. Linda Costanzo also wrote the BRS series review book, which is more of a compacted version of this, so both sources together were excellent.
I haven't read all of it, but it has really helped clear up CV, Pulm, Renal, and Acid-base physiology.It does the job. Not overly complicated, a bit redundant, but if you're not up for/don't have time for the GH, "Big Costanzo" is a winner. The key with this book is to read a chapter in chunks--the same probably goes for GH and most larger textbooks, I guess. Most if not all chapters are less than 70pgs (most are around 40-50). If you're a med student and working in organ systems of 3-6 weeks, take 4-5 days to get through a chapter comfortably (8-10pgs/day) at the beginning of the block you'll be pleased, in my opinion.One critique would be to have a couple Box sections to highlight clinical experiments. If you have medical school physio question source though you're not missing much at all with regards to experiments though.
Great book for M1 students. MUCH better than the THICK physio textbooks that you never get to finish reading and if you try to do so, you will get lost in the tiny details. It covers 99.99% of everything a medical student needs to know. The figures are very clear and understandable and the Clinical Cases are great. Added bonus: if English is your second language, this is very easy to follow and understand. I'm thrilled our instructor chose this book.
So far I have only read a couple chapters in this book but Linda is the truth! She takes the complicated concepts that my professors at school have trouble explaining/conveying to the class and puts it in lay man's terms. Medical school physiology does not have to be hard and Linda proves this with her simple explainations and simple illustrations. I advise any medical student who is having trouble grasping concepts in class to purchase this ASAP!
Best physiology book overall for medical school. Almost a must have. You can get away without it, but it's SO much easier to just take the time to read the book. Everything is crystal clear, easy to read, and CONCISE (which is apparently the most challenging thing to do when writing medical textbooks).
This book will probably explain physiology concepts better than your professors do. I use this as a supplemental text for medical school and mainly consult it when I feel like the concepts are being made more confusing than they need to be. More often than not, reading the same material in Costanzo will clear things up for me just fine. Especially helpful for endocrinology.
